My mom is in Russia doing research (she's a historian). Since my dad and I are both working on conversions she recognized this as a very early precursor, at the Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy House-Museum in Moscow.
She writes: "Here's Leo Tolstoy's bicycle -- he learned to ride when he was 67 -- and imported "the first Rover bicycle in Russia," according to the museum attendant who lowered the rope so I could take this picture. I think it's a fixie. (You can find out more about Rovers on the London science museum site -- started manufacturing in 1885.)"
