A Celebration of Cycling Simplicity - A Gathering of New Friends

The Website

Back in 1999 I was participating in a discussion about fixed gear bicycles at an internet forum. Many of the participants didn't even know what a fixed gear was. We've all heard that a picture is worth a thousand works, so I uploaded a photo of my bike onto my real estate website so that everyone could see the particular detail that we were discussing.

One thing led to another, and before the day was over, I'd received several other photos of fixed gear bicycles from the other participants in this discussion. Organizing them onto a simple page so that viewers could see all of the other photos was easy enough to do, but no one could have imagined the result five years later.

What started out as a few photos of bikes has become a website with photos of over 4,800 viewer submitted fixed gear bicycles from all around the world. What started out with just three or four viewers has ballooned into The FixedGearGallery.com, a website with over 4,500 daily visitors from over 100 nations. Feature stories, how-to-do-it articles, a bicycle swap meet, and more are all a part of the gallery.

One day in October 2004, as I was working on this site, my wife Katy, said "Ya' know, you should have a festival, a symposium right out here on the lawn next summer." So, there ya go.

The 2005 Symposium

During the 2nd weekend of August in 2005, we hosted The 1st International Fixed Gear Symposium on the grounds of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons (The Commons) in Traverse City. Ninety-five folks showed up! What a cool time. Photos and Contest Results are here.

The 2006 Symposium

For 2006 we added an Alley Cat, a bicycle concours, and a 100 mile option for the Big Ride on Saturday plus the Skid Contest, Trackstand. Again, we enjoyed fabulous weather, terrific company, and a full weekend.
All photos, results, and info are HERE.
Local news story The print story had a nice shot of Tracy Halacinski watching Bob Schutter adjust the BB.

All of these suggestions are "riding distance" to the Symposium site.
Camping - There is primitive tent camping right here at The Grand Traverse Commons for a couple dozen tents. (no fires, limited shower). If you want to tent camp somewhere else or have a pickup camper or a van, let us know well in advance as we'll have a list of free private camping/motorhome/van sites that will all be within riding distance to our site. These would probably be 1-3 vehicles per spot and we'll be personally assigning them.
Timber Ridge Campground - About 6 miles from venue, 4 miles of paved bike path, two miles of paved road with a big hill. www.timberridgecampground.com
Other camping possibilities - our home is about 20 miles from town and there's 1/2 mile of dirt road, but you are welcome to camp out there too. eMail me at fixedgearwizard@yahoo.com
